DANHIRE TRAILER SALES & TOWBARS LIMITED is an NTTA Trusted Workshop
A Trusted Workshop is a top quality custom care business controlled by the NTTA who head and lead the light trailer industry.
A company who undergo an annual assessment, who deliver and perform high within the quality secured requirements, are given the award and allowed to display the trusted workshop logo.
This helps the public to choose all services within the trailer and towing industry and the company will always try in giving the best service at all times.
On Friday 26th January DANHIRE TRAILERS welcomed the High Sheriff of Suffolk and Sarah Smithurst MBE, the Business Development Manager of the NTTA, (National Trailer and Towing Association).
DANHIRE had been awarded a Top Award from the NTTA in recognition of their dedicated service and work with Trailer/Caravan Road Safety, which includes working with the Armed Road Policing Team to help check Trailers during Roadside stops.
Sarah Smithurst MBE travelled down from the NTTA Headquarters in Nottingham to introduce The High Sheriff of Suffolk, who presented the award to Mark and Mike, Directors of DANHIRE TRAILER SALES & TOWBARS LIMITED.
With complete surprise, The High Sheriff revealed he too was presenting another major Award to DANHIRE, a Certificate of Recognition on behalf of the communities for sterling work in Suffolk.
Certainly a Day held at the DANHIRE ‘Accreditation 5 Star Workshops’ to remember!
It turned out to also be a surprise to Nidge Bedingfield, of IMAJAZ Ltd web/graphics/arts company, as he was also presented with a well earned ‘Certificate of Recognition from DANHIRE Trailers‘, by The High Sheriff of Suffolk.
Nidge has known Mike for many years, and has been the Webmaster for their website ever since they started their DANHIRE business journey: danhiretrailers.co.uk
Mike always says ‘Websites do really work’ … as Nidge regularly posts up information on the website of ‘Trailers For Sale’ and it’s not long before a happy buyer phones in to make a purchase!
Nidge is also responsible for setting out the WAVENEY TOWING AND LEISURE NEWSLETTER, which is DANHIRE’s ONLINE Monthly Newsletter, regularly publishing information about DANHIRE’s work with Trailers and Towbars, and the latest important Safety advice: waveneytowingandleisure.co.uk
Below are some short videos of the presentations:

With just a week away to receiving our very unexpected AWARD given by the NTTA National Trailer Towing Association.
Mike and Mark were invited to appear on the PAUL STEPHENS SHOW on PARK RADIO in their DISS STUDIOS.
Listen to the full recording here:
Once set up in the studio Presenter Paul did a telephone link to SARAH SMITHURST MBE in NOTTINGHAM! Sarah is BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER of NTTA.
After Paul had asked her about her MBE and of the work in Nottinghamshire Police and enjoying her time spent setting up a department in the Police in Ghana. On retirement Sarah joined NTTA, where she is always busy promoting Trailer Road Safety, and involved working on Parliamentary business and a full time job of answering to any Trailer Dealer problems. Explaining on air the importance of caring for towbars, getting them checked regularly and making sure your vehicle is able to tow.
Mike and Mark then explained the history of DANHIRE TRAILER SALES AND TOWBARS, on how the company was formed and the kind of work which is carried out each year. Also explaining how the leisure side of towing has been busy with people staying in UK after the Covid lock downs., and very pleased with the loyalty of their customers.
DANHIRE have been busy not just with installing towbars, but also with Horse Trailers and General Trailers requiring Servicing and Repairs, along with the volume of New and Used Trailers being sold throughout the year.
The AWARD will be presented to DANHIRE on FRIDAY 26th at 2pm at their workshop: UNIT 19 WAVENEY VALLEY BUSINESS PARK DITCHINGHAM BUNGAY NR35 2JG by the HIGH SHERIFF of SUFFOLK!
We would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to PAUL STEPHENS and the hospitality received at PARK RADIO DISS.
Anyone interested in Trailers, Towbars and Towing Safety, please feel free to join us on Friday January 26th. 1.30 for the 2pm ceremony.
Well all at Waveney Towing and Leisure, The ON LINE Newsletter, on behalf of our sister company DANHIRE TRAILERS and TOWBARS, can really say we have enjoyed a very very busy year, the amount of Towbar fitting has been amazing!
So a big welcome to all the new customers who have travelled the breadth of Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridge. Oh must not forget the family from Essex who enjoyed our market town while we spent the allocated time working on their car. We always laugh and say “Don’t walk too fast as Bungay not very big”.
A number have returned to collect their car still laughing having enjoyed a Breakfast in Town or just sat in the Market Place drinking Coffee and eating Ice Cream… with many customers getting interested in the Towns History.
BIG THANK YOU!
A BIG THANK YOU to you all for your patience waiting for us to book in time slots to fit the Towbars, and to the many coming in for Trailer, Caravan Servicing and Repairs.
Our Entrance
We enjoy being asked “Where do we find you?”
Or “Well I never knew there was a Business Park there all the years I have lived in Bungay”.
It’s lovely when customers arrive and are truly taken back by how the Entrance is so inviting with the long sweeping driveway, all the grass area mowed and with part of the River Waveney flowing through the Suffolk Norfolk border. This is of course all due the hard work of our Landlords Steve and Becky Cundy, where the overall standard of buildings and the after care is of very high standard!
10mph sign
The business park is a very busy one lots of vehicles going in and out during the working day. People also going to rented containers and Caravan Storage.
We must remember there is a 10mph speed limit along the service road!
How to find us!
OUR BUSINESS PARK ENTRANCE
Look for the Blue Signs Off DITCHINGHAM DAM
Yes, look for the BLUE SIGNS (Waveney Valley Business Park) as you Drive in you will absorb the Picturesque Idyllic Tranquil setting of just one part of the Waveney Valley.
Please be careful you will be turning off a two way road… there could be parked vehicles close… and people walking to and from Bungay.
There are plenty of signs warning of NO WALKING in the Private areas during the day and after hours… plus be aware of Speed humps along the Drive, and aware of any oncoming vehicles as it is a single track only! There are designated passing places preventing running over the grass edges… Within the Park areas running along all the units there are Yellow WALK WAY AREAS to safe guard all pedestrians. These must be used!
Once arriving at our Unit 19 we will welcome you promptly to discuss the work to be carried out, you may be double parked at this stage, but once any trailers disconnected they will be safely moved to our service area in our purpose designed repair centre… we make it an easy operation for you 🙂

The other day we fitted a Tow Trust Detachable Towbar with 7 Pin Dedicated Specific wiring kit, to a 2023 FORD PUMA.
Once fitted and all coded into the vehicle electric system.

News NOT ABOUT Trailers
How nice to bring latest news NOT ABOUT Trailers or Towbars?
YOUR INTERIOR MIRROR = NEW IMAGE
MARKED POLICE VEHICLES
YES VOLVO V90 and XC90 Saloons and Estates.
A long while coming the Police are changing their fleet of BMW X5s.
The BMW X5 was a real trouble car for them, especially after one fatal crash where the engine broke.
BMW became so unreliable.
But strange these Police Vehicles will still be TURBO DIESELS.
Word on street is only Saloons and Estates for the Police.
Public will only have choice of SUV.
So if you want drive saloon or estate you will have to join the Police.
You have seen one you like by a Photograph? It’s just how much you would like to pay? Do you really know anything about Trailers? You do not know who to take with you to view? Well, take a chance it must be ok? The seller mentions everything about the Trailer. Well the colour is nice, I think i will go for this. Pay the money and drive home.
Perhaps I will on the safe side get it serviced.
Customer purchased Horse Trailer through a private sale.
Just recently we at DANHIRE have serviced a Horse Trailer for a New Customer.
Pics show badly maintained Brakes. Back plates badly rusted. Not much metal retaining brake shoes. Wheel bearings worn.
and tyres dated 2005, well passed their safety date!
Oh dear! Just on a normal service, and we have found major faults with the Brakes, Wheel Bearings, and Passed the Safety Date on Tyres!
This is a large bill on top of a private sale already paid for!
DON’T FORGET!
Always give us a call and we will offer to check over any Trailer for you before any private purchase.
We often get asked how much weight a specific vehicle can tow. It is important to know the exact towing capacity of your vehicle for safety, legal and insurance purposes.
This is specific to each individual vehicle, so details of the towing capacity for your vehicle that are found in the owner’s handbook, the manufacturer’s website and so should only be taken as a guide.
The actual, exact and only towing capacity figure that should be used for your vehicle is that which is stamped on the Vehicle Identification Number Plate, VIN Plate. The VIN plate can usually be found under the bonnet or on a door pillar and details of the location will be in the owner’s hand-book.
The plate will be either an alloy plate riveted to the body or a sticker. The VIN plate will display either 3 or 4 sets of weight, it is these weights that the authorities use to determine whether your vehicle is over-laden.
Once you have located your VIN plate it will look similar to the image below. The VIN plate will display either 3 or 4 sets of weight, it is these weights that the authorities use to determine whether your vehicle is over-laden.
The image shows a VIN plate from a vehicle that is homologated Approved to tow:
A – 2505kg B – 4200kg C – 1250kg D – 1300kg
2505kg – Gross vehicle weight, the Maximum Allowable Mass (MAM) of the vehicle including occupants, fuel and payload.
4200kg – Gross train weight, the combined maximum allowable mass of the vehicle and trailer.
250kg & 1300kg – Maximum axle loads front and rear respectively.
The manufacturer’s recommended maximum towing capacity for your vehicle is the gross vehicle weight subtracted from gross train weight. The vehicle identification plate detailed in the above picture has a towing capacity of 1695kg.
This is your figure you should look at: 4200kg -2505kg = 1695kg

NTTA Meeting and AGM 2022
DANHIRE TRAILERS and TOWBARS travelled to Eastwood Hall Hotel Nottingham to attend the NTTA Trailer Association yearly meeting.
A very well attended meeting with a large varied number of speakers, bringing lots of the latest information of new Trailers, Caravans and Electric Vehicles.
Well done NTTA helping your members working out in the field. (Sorry for the pun)
BY AIR AND SEA

NOT EASY BUT HOLD YOUR GROUND
Heard the story of a Driver towing a Trailer who moved past the stop line at a Red Traffic light in order to let an Emergency vehicle go through (on blue lights).
Don’t put yourself or others at risk.
At Traffic lights drivers of Emergency Vehicles will find their way through.
If you are the first in a Queue at red lights just leave the driver of emergency vehicle find the way through.
Do not go past a Red Light unless instructed to do so by a uniformed Police Officer.
OH NO NOT AGAIN!
IN JANUARY 2014 a young boy aged 3 was walking with his mother on a foot path in Bedminster Bristol when a 2 tonne Trailer launched its self off the rear of a Land Rover moving onto the pavement and crushing Freddie Hussey against a wall. Sadly Freddie died.
The Trailer was not coupled correctly.
The NTTA Trailer Association then started a major campaign to support the family and urge Parliament force tight measures in Trailer Safety.
DON’T FORGET
TOWSAFE4FREDDIE
NOW IN 2022 we see another major accident whee a Trailer came off the rear of a tow vehicle crossing the road and colliding with an oncoming car and killing the lady driver.
So PLEASE TOW SAFE and DRIVE SAFE!
Make sure your Trailer or Caravan is safely secured!
We at DANHIRE TRAILER SALES & TOWBARS LIMITED are pleased to announce we came out on top at our recent Audit and Inspection on behalf of the National Trailer and Towing Assoc.
This is to represent this National Body covering all aspects within the Trailer Repairs and Towing Industry…..
BEHIND CLOSED DOORS
Many people ask is it a legal requirement to close the top rear doors of a horse trailer when travelling?
Some say it’s the law, others say its down to the Driver.
But there is no set answer re: the Road Policing.
Safety wise if a horse or pony is not secured by halter or hard collar, it is important to have the doors shut which makes the load secure.
There are many times where accidents have occurred where the horse has been frightened and jumped out of the trailer.
Also any containers be secured and not anywhere near the horse.

Many people ask how often to service their Commercial Trailer?
We always recommend once every 6 months – especially when the Trailer is in heavy daily use!

A few days spent in Thornton – i.e. – Dales, Yorkshire, it was a must to go and visit this well known business. The amount of Classic cars waiting at Auction is amazing.
It really is worth a visit and Derek – Wow a very very nice person.
Yes it was a Sunday in May and raining hence the Coats . . .
LETS GO ELECTRIC
At the present time only a few Electric Cars can tow but so much work is being done and in next couple years we will see more and more coming on stream.
Word on street is FORD MOTOR COMPANY has the Battery power and look forward to now producing next year 600,000 Electric vehicles which will include 150,000 E – Electric Transit vans for the commercial sector.
A mid size 4×4 Electric will launch in 2023
Ford has a target of two million EV per year by 2026

Revamped Highway Code
There are many new rules in the all new revamped Highway Code.
Here is just one to be aware of:
Driver Vehicle Standards Agency Officers have now the power to stop you on all roads and motorways.
They will attract you by flashing amber lights from front requesting you to follow to a safe place to stop.
Or from behind directing you to pull over to the side of the road using left indicator.
In all cases it is an offence if you do not stop!

DanHIRE Trailers ROADSIDE CHECK with SUFFOLK POLICE
On March 17th DanHIRE Trailers joined Suffolk Constabulary Roads Policing Team and NTTA National Trailer and Towing Assoc.
Based in Clifton Road Car Park, Lowestoft, several Trailers were checked and found to have many faults: Bald tyres, number plates missing, problems with lights not working…
All agencies took part throughout the day and reported at end of day over 75 motorists had committed serious infringements and failures: licences, insurances, badly applied window tinting, drug driving checks, and most of all; driving while using mobile phones and not wearing seat belts!

ARE YOU TOWING BLIND
IT IS IMPORTANT to have Extended Mirrors fitted to your vehicle and a legal requirement you must be able to see 4 metres from the side of your trailer /caravan……and distance of 20 metres behind driver.
So if your Trailer / Caravan is wider than your tow vehicle by law you must fit and use extended mirrors you can be fined up to £1000 and 3 points on license.
Many drivers have received a fixed penalty of £60 and 3 points!
REGULAR TRAILER SERVICE SAVES MONEY
Question (commonly asked)
WHEN I START TO BRAKE WHEN TRAVELLING MY TRAILER STARTS TO BANG AT REAR OF VEHICLE?
ANSWER
This BANGING may be due to a worn damper within the trailer coupling.
Bearing in mind the damper acts as a Shock Absorber. The trailer tends to nose dive towards tow vehicle…
If this is the case a new damper would be required.
BUT before to much expense it is important the trailer brakes are checked and brake cables working correctly.
Good working Brakes are so important.
So a brake check, if there’s still banging you will need new damper.
Since 28th SEPTEMBER 2021 Drivers planning road trips throughout Europe will need to throw away the GB Sticker and replace with a UK Sticker.
The GB is no longer valid!
Drivers under the new law will either need to buy new number plate showing the UK letters or buy a UK Sticker.
A GREEN STICKER on the edge of number plates will signify that the vehicle is FULL Electric powered…
WELL I NEVER KNEW THAT!
THE RULES OF TOWING:
ON A SINGLE CARRIAGEWAY WHICH, IS SIGN POSTED 60mph, THE MAXIMUM SPEED TO TOW IF SAFE IS 50mph.
ON A MOTORWAY OR DUAL CARRIAGEWAY MAXIMUM SPEED IS 70mph unless stated otherwise. BUT THE MAXIMUM TO TOW IS 60mph! If safe to do so.
Towing Caravan or Trailer DO NOT USE RIGHT HAND LANE ON A 3 OR MORE LANE MOTORWAY.
KEEPING IN TOW – No Test Now Needed !!!!
The Government has changed the ruling in order to free up Driving Examiners to help with testing new HGV Drivers to assist the shortage in the industry.
It is not easy TOWING A CARAVAN OR TRAILER you may be one of those who no longer have to take a Test.
BUT it is so important we all keep up with high standards of Driving and promoting Road Safety.
ALWAYS consider a TRAILER / CARAVAN FAMILIAR DRIVING COURSE!
Towing Laws, Attaching the Trailer, General Driving, Reversing…
Please Contact DanHIRE Trailers as we can direct you to a safe towing future!
KEEP REGULAR CHECKS ON TRAILER BRAKES
Pictures show Before and After! So many people run Trailers from new and never check or get them serviced until it becomes too late, then have to spend large sums of money getting them repaired.

WHAT CAN MY CAR TOW? ( Weight )
With the easing of LOCKDOWN possibly in sight, and we all want to get away, make sure the Car matches the Caravan . . .
It is vital you can legally tow, in failure to do so can lead to expensive fines ,points on your licence and can endanger you and other road users if there was an accident.
Don’t forget you are towing a heavy cargo.
Every car has a MAXIMUM MASS you can tow and this being set by the vehicle manufacturer and can be found on the vehicle VIN PLATE. Which is found under the Bonnet or on the door pillar.
1 GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT 3000kg This is the GROSS vehicle weight – The total maximum weight of vehicle so do not load over this weight.
2GROSS TRAIN WEIGHT 5000kg This is the GROSS TRAIN WEIGHT – Total maximum weight of vehicle plus caravan load.
3MAXIMUM FRONT AXLE LOAD 1500kg This is the Maximum front axle load which may be supported by the vehicle front axle.
4MAXIMUM REAR AXLE LOAD 1600kg This is the Maximum Rear axle load which may be supported by the rear axle of vehicle.
If you are unable to find VIN PLATE refer to Vehicle Handbook.
CALCULATE YOUR MAXIMUM TOWING WEIGHT
To calculate the maximum weight your car can tow, all you need to do is subtract the gross vehicle weight from the gross train weight.
Example 5000kg minus 3000kg equals 2000kg. This is the absolute maximum your car can tow.
Also Remember!
The MAXIMUM TOWING WIDTH is 2.55 metres
The MAXIMUM TOWING LENGTH is 7 metres
BE SAFE – TOW SAFE
Horse Trailer Floors and Ramps
WAVENEY TOWING and LEISURE the ON-LINE Newsletter reporting and bringing the attention to all Horse Trailer owners the real importance of keeping Floors and Ramps in top condition.
We have been busy in the Danhire Workshops fitting Motor Movers, and questions always seem to get asked, so just to recap:-
Never cut or extend the wiring loom, this leads to the Motors to turn at different speeds, and any spare cable should be run out in straight lines and fitted correctly.
Do not wind the cables into coils as this can make them very hot and in doing so damage the modules 🙂
