SAFE TOWING IN 2023

AS WE MOVE INTO 2023 there is still no sign of regulated MOTs for Trailers up to 3500kg and Caravans.

This does mean it’s really important it is to keep regular servicing and checkovers to maintain a good working Trailer.

How to check your maximum towing weight

We often get asked how much weight a specific vehicle can tow. It is important to know the exact towing capacity of your vehicle for safety, legal and insurance purposes.

This is specific to each individual vehicle, so details of the towing capacity for your vehicle that are found in the owner’s handbook, the manufacturer’s website and so should only be taken as a guide.

The actual, exact and only towing capacity figure that should be used for your vehicle is that which is stamped on the Vehicle Identification Number Plate, VIN Plate. The VIN plate can usually be found under the bonnet or on a door pillar and details of the location will be in the owner’s hand-book.

The plate will be either an alloy plate riveted to the body or a sticker. The VIN plate will display either 3 or 4 sets of weight, it is these weights that the authorities use to determine whether your vehicle is over-laden.

Once you have located your VIN plate it will look similar to the image below. The VIN plate will display either 3 or 4 sets of weight, it is these weights that the authorities use to determine whether your vehicle is over-laden.

The image shows a VIN plate from a vehicle that is homologated Approved to tow:

A – 2505kg
B – 4200kg
C – 1250kg
D – 1300kg

2505kg – Gross vehicle weight, the Maximum Allowable Mass (MAM) of the vehicle including occupants, fuel and payload.

4200kg – Gross train weight, the combined maximum allowable mass of the vehicle and trailer.

250kg & 1300kg – Maximum axle loads front and rear respectively.

The manufacturer’s recommended maximum towing capacity for your vehicle is the gross vehicle weight subtracted from gross train weight. The vehicle identification plate detailed in the above picture has a towing capacity of 1695kg.

This is your figure you should look at:
4200kg -2505kg = 1695kg

NTTA Meeting and AGM 2022

DANHIRE TRAILERS and TOWBARS travelled to Eastwood Hall Hotel Nottingham to attend the NTTA Trailer Association yearly meeting.

A very well attended meeting with a large varied number of speakers, bringing lots of the latest information of new Trailers, Caravans and Electric Vehicles.

Well done NTTA helping your members working out in the field. (Sorry for the pun)

NOT EASY BUT HOLD YOUR GROUND

Heard the story of a Driver towing a Trailer who moved past the stop line at a Red Traffic light in order to let an Emergency vehicle go through (on blue lights).

Don’t put yourself or others at risk.

At Traffic lights drivers of Emergency Vehicles will find their way through.

If you are the first in a Queue at red lights just leave the driver of emergency vehicle find the way through.

Do not go past a Red Light unless instructed to do so by a uniformed Police Officer.

OH NO NOT AGAIN!

IN JANUARY 2014 a young  boy aged 3 was walking with his mother on a foot path in Bedminster Bristol when a 2 tonne Trailer launched its self off the rear of a Land Rover moving onto the pavement and crushing Freddie Hussey against a wall. Sadly Freddie died.

The Trailer was not coupled correctly.

The NTTA Trailer Association then started a major campaign to support the family and urge Parliament force tight measures in Trailer Safety.

DON’T FORGET

TOWSAFE4FREDDIE

NOW IN 2022 we see another major accident whee a Trailer came off the rear of a tow vehicle crossing the road and colliding with an oncoming car and killing the lady driver.

So PLEASE TOW SAFE and DRIVE SAFE!

Make sure your Trailer or Caravan is safely secured!
